Family dentist in North Beach and Karrinyup: all ages

By North Beach Dental · · 4 min read

Many households in Karrinyup and North Beach span a few generations of teeth: kids losing baby teeth, parents with old fillings, and often an older parent with a denture. If you've searched "family dentist Karrinyup", one practice can look after all of them. Here's how that works with a family dentist in North Beach, and how to make it work for your family.

What a family dentist in North Beach actually does

A family dentist provides general care for every age. That includes check-ups and cleans, fillings, root canal treatment, extractions, crowns and bridges, dentures, mouthguards and emergency care. Because everyone is seen at one practice, a few things get easier:

  • Fewer trips. Ask about booking family members together when you call.

  • Records in one place. Seeing the household together makes it easier to talk about habits at home.

  • Follow-up after treatment. We often follow up with patients after treatment, whether it's a child's filling or a parent's extraction.

  • Costs explained up front. Every treatment plan comes with its costs before anything starts.

Children: the first dentist appointment and growing up

We suggest bringing your child in when their first tooth appears or by about 12 months, whichever comes first. That first dentist appointment is mostly about getting to know us. They sit in the chair, we take a look, and you can ask about brushing, teething and snacks. Short, positive visits early on make later ones easier.

As kids grow, check-ups track new adult teeth, spot early decay between teeth, and cover mouthguards once sport starts. Our children's dentistry page explains each stage.

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule

Many families can use the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). Services Australia explains that it covers a capped amount for each eligible child over two consecutive calendar years, indexed every 1 January. It covers check-ups, X-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals and extractions, but not orthodontic or cosmetic work, or dental care in a hospital. It's for children aged 0 to 17 who are eligible for Medicare, in families that get certain Services Australia payments. We accept the CDBS for eligible children.

Adults: what to expect at the dentist

For adults, a check-up with us covers every tooth, your gums and your bite, plus X-rays when they're due and a scale and clean. Our usual recall is an exam, scale and clean every six months, with bitewing X-rays every two years, though your dentist may suggest a different interval. Adults who grind or clench at night may also be offered a splint to protect their teeth while they sleep.

Our hygiene page explains the clean, and our general dentistry page covers fillings, extractions and root canal treatment.

Grandparents and older parents

Older family members often have different needs: dry mouth from medicines, older crowns and fillings to watch, gum disease to keep under control, or a denture that no longer fits well. We make full and partial dentures, and we can check whether a loose or rubbing denture can be adjusted or needs replacing. Our dentures page explains the options, and our care for older adults page covers dry mouth and medicines. We also see DVA patients.

Health funds for the whole family

We're a preferred provider for HBF, Medibank, HCF and nib, which usually means a smaller gap for members of those funds. We claim on the spot through HICAPS.

Frequently asked questions

Is a family dentist near me the same as a paediatric dentist?

No. A paediatric dentist is a registered specialist in children's dentistry, often for children with more complex needs. A family dentist provides general care for everyone. If your child needs a specialist, we'll explain why and arrange the referral.

How often should children have a check-up?

It depends on the child. Your dentist will suggest how often to come back based on their teeth, their diet and how well brushing is going at home.

Can we book the whole family on one day?

Ask when you book, and we'll tell you what times are available for family members together.

What should each of us bring?

Health fund and Medicare cards, a list of any medicines, and recent X-rays from your previous dentist if you have them. Our new patients page lists the details.
